Despite it being a highly lovable poem during the time and up-to-date, I do feel it did downgrade the class and standards of women. Specifically, the reference to the ocean for the dark lady where the speaker mentions how she has a larger pool of lovers and adding one wouldn't make much of a difference (Shakespeare, 2021). It paints women as characters that love polyandry, an element that our traditions don't take much pride in. Women are meant to be valued, preserved, and loved.
